Dover
Dover Castle

You can find the castle easily by following the signs up to the hill where you can see Dover Castle already.

It was at this location where Admiral Ramsay started and coordinated the Operation Dynamo, the retreat of the Allied troops from France in June 1940 from Dunkirk.
In the hill are several tunnel complexes build, already during the time of Napoleon and even till the Cold War around 1960.
After operation Dynamo the tunnels where used for the defence of Britain in the Battle of Britain. Later in the war it was also used to coordinate the defence against the V1 and V2 rockets coming in from France.
You can visit the tunnels only with a guide because the tunnels are so large and complex that you can easily get lost for some time. It was not allowed to take pictures inside the tunnel systems.
Outside you can find several bunkers, pill boxes and gun emplacements. They are quit deferent from the German type's we know. They aren't that heavily build and closed up like the one's across the Cannel.

Dover
St. Martin's Battery

Just above the harbour you can find the village St. Martin's Battery, it was part of an old fortification.

At this location were several heavy guns placed to protect the harbour of Dover and the rest of the English coast, as well to attack enemy ships in the Canal. They where not allowed to fire to the coast of France as an answer to German shellings, because that would result in more shellings on Dover.
The gun's where placed on an already existing fortification from long ago and the old available buildings where made suitable for there new task, so you find old and new works mixed up.

Types:
3x gun emplacements.
1x pill box.
1x tunnel.
Dover
Wanstone Battery

This location is about 5km's outside Dover on the east side of the castle. When driving to this location you will pass some other old WWII sides like the big Radar antennas, used to protect England against the German Luftwaffe.

The location of this battery is not easy to find, but we where guided by some “English bunker guides”.
From the emplacements is hardly anything to see, a lot of objects have been demolished or burried underground. What you can find are some ammunition bunkers and personnel buildings.
All so there where some heavy guns placed here to protect the harbour of Dover and the rest of the English coast, as well to attack enemy ships in the Canal. They where not allowed to fire at the coast of France as an answer on German shellings, because that would result in more shellings on Dover.
