In the centre of the city of Cherbourg, on top of the big mountain Fort de Roule, lies a former French fortification that is also been used by the Germans as Headquarters for the Festung Cherbourg.
There is only one way up and down for the public. Halfway you will be able to visit the Galleries117 Museum and on the top is the other Museum with lots of information about the war and the Cherbourg battle.

We show you the pictures in two section, one from outside and the other one via the "Museum Galeries 117" that is built in the caves, tunnels and bunkers the Germans built during the war. The Museum is very special and modern, showing with multi media presentations what happened to the hard labour prisoners and what they had to stand by working in these "galleries". Via these tunnels your are also entering the four gun bunkers. At this moment the Fire Control bunker is still closed for public.
The others object on the mountain can not be visited because they lie on Military Terrain and are closed with high fences.

Cherbourg-Octeville, Gare Maritime/ Museum La Cité de la Mere.
AOK 7, KVA J1, Festung Cherbourg, KV.Gr. Cherbourg, KVU Gr. Cherbourg See, Stp. 213 M.K.B. Seebahnhoff.

In front of the mountain with the Fort de Roule, lies the harbour of Cherbourg and its former "Gare Maritime" (railway station). Around this site the M.K.B. Seebahnhoff with lots of bunkers and many so called "Sk Sonderkonstruktion" was located . Most of these bunkers are demolished during the past decades and new development of the harbour. Only tree of over twenty bunkers are left and one of them lies on the Car Ferry terrain behind several steel fences and buildings and therefore is not visible.

Driving towards the Museum and the quay, you will encounter a SK bunker and driving or walking to the end of the quay you will see another bunker. You can come near to it from outside the Museum premises, but when you will get on top of it, you have to enter the Museum for about 18 euro!
Next to this bunker they dug out a dry dock and places for one of the first French atomic submarines . Here you can see the enormous size of such a modern war machine.

Types:
1x 631 SK Embrasured emplacement for 4.7cm fortress anti-tank gun (t).
1x 649 Casemate for medium pivoting guns (90º), with Flak 2cm on top.
