Hamburg, city.
Flaktürme.
In the city of Hamburg it self on two places we visited some very big and impressive Flaktürme.
One is located at the south side of the city at the Neuhöferstrasse and is known as Flaktürm VI Wilhelmsburg,
It is a Type 2 built in 1943, 47x57x42mtr lwh, 9 floors, walls about 3mtr, 30.000 shelter places, hospital floor included. The main Flak guns on this tower were 12.8cm Flak-zwilling 40 guns
Near this bunker is also a "bunker house" standing. A house built in concrete, that had a for us unknown function during the war.
The other Flaktürm is standing in the city centre at the Heiligengeistfeld and is known as Flaktürm IV Heiligengeistfeld.
It is a Type 1 built in1942, 70Lx70Wx39H mtr, 5 floors, walls about 3mtr, 6.000 shelter places. The main Flak guns on this tower were 12.8cm Flak-zwilling 40 guns.
Beside these heavy Flak guns there were all kind of other lighter Flak installed on top. The bunker was also used as a Luftschutzraum for the inhabitants of Hamburg.
In Hamburg after the war some Flaktürme and Leittürme were broken down for new city development and building.
