Ships lock in Twente kanaal, Sluisstraat


The Twente Kanaal is a canal that runs from Enschede in the east towards Zutphen in the west and is mostly used by commercial ships loaded with sand, bricks and all kind of merchandise.
During the Cold War period the government decided to build bunkers to protect personnel, working at critical objects in the public domain. It provided them a secure place to stay during crisis and so being able to operate the installations they where responsible for.

The former BB-bunker is located at the Almelosestraat in the village Delden and now in use by the firm Ricas, Risk & Safety Training centre.
During the Cold War period the Civil Defense organization, called the BB - Bescherming Bevolking, was operating with a small professional staff and volunteers. Their task was to organize the safety, evacuations, damage control and rescue of the population in case off a war or disastrous situation.
Therefore the government had built bunkers with facilities to keep 30-40 persons doing there job for 2 weeks in an ABC-save bunker.
