The French emperor Napoleon I came with the idea of making a canal from east to west in front of Den Helder heading to the south. Around 1827 they start digging the canal, together with a so called "paved road" along the canal, under Dutch authority. Some strongpoints where integrated in the line and later on some strengthened buildings like an ammo storage and so where built into the defence line.
During the WW2 the Germans used the building also and added even new buildings to it, together with some strongpoint's (Wn. 112a M, 112b M, 112 M.)
