Arnhem
Dutch Cold War IJssellinie
In Oosterbeek-Arnhem near the railroad-bridge on private property, you find a Koch-observation bunker. The nearby viaduct for cars under the rail track is also a place where during the battle Market Garden in Arnhem/Oosterbeek heavy fighting took place. You can still see a lot of bullet holes in the viaduct.
In Arnhem near the former Elisabeth Gasthuis, on the hill near the river Rhine, you find another Koch-observation bunker. A 100 meters further in the public-garden of the Museum voor Moderne Kunsten (Modern Art) you find the last two Koch bunkers. All the locations have/had a marvellous view over the river Rhine and the land behind it. All the bunkers have been closed.
These Koch-bunkers are developed by a German Gauleiter E. Koch. Some measurements: diameter 140cm, height 170cm, thickness 10cm, cover 20cm, entrance 75/75cm.
These bunkers have been placed here during the Cold War time as part of the IJssel line.,A bigger defence line on several locations along the rivers Rhine and IJssel.
